Louis Comfort Tiffany (American, 1848–1933) embodied the artistic spirit of America’s Gilded Age. In the early 1890s, he developed a method of blending different colors together in glass while it was in a molten state to achieve subtle effects of shading and texture. He called this type of glass “Favrile” (from “fabrile,” an Old English word meaning “handwrought”). This pen recalls an iridescent Favrile glass vase (ca. 1900) with a peacock feather motif, produced by the Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company (American, 1892–1902).
